NOW, FOR THE FEATURE ARTICLE . . .
Drums and Females:
A Few UNSCIENTIFIC Statistics:
Several ladies have written me, asking to know
some statistics about the ratios of drumming students,
(men to women.)
* Back in the early 1960s, it seemed
there were almost no female students at all.
* In the late 60s (67-69) it seemed to increase a little.
The ratio was then about 10% female and 90% male.
* NOW, about 40% of all drumming students are female.
Which, means the current ratio is about 40% female and 60%
male.
* Here online, since about 1996, there are
approximatley 500 paid female students (with passwords) and
maybe as many as 6,000 females who are subscribed to this
free newsletter, and other free lessons that I offer.
It seems . . . more and more females are
becoming drummers all the time.
...................................................
It shouldn't be too long before the #1 drummer in
the World is a female!
...................................................
I've noticed one other interesting fact over the
years, that surprises me . . .
It seems that about 90% of the females, do NOT go
on to play professionally. There may be many reasons
for such a 'bad statistic', but it seems to be fairly
accurate.
Women seem to shy away from drumming AS A PROFESSION,
for some reason I don't totally understand.
I've noticed that many females simply want
to PROVE that they can become drummers, and once they've
proven the point well enough to themselves . . . they
tend to lose interest and move on to other challenges.
Why aren't there MORE female drummers?
It could be that the professional-end of the business
still isn't ACCEPTING females as it should. In other words,
a lot of bands will tend to choose a 'male drummer' over
a female. It seems to be a psychological hurdle for women that
means it's still HARDER for women to find a niche
in the work place. It isn't fair at all, but it seems to
be a factor.
Just the same . . . Women are often more rhythmic
than men. They tend to be more sensitive to the beat
and more self-expressive . . . than men are. They're more
imaginative and creative too!
Men tend to play with MORE FORCE . . .
They tend to become stronger, more power-driving
drummers than women.
Women tend to sometimes play more timidly . . .
than men. When a drummer is too timid onstage,
it can cause trouble. The other players will tend
to run away with the beat . . . then BLAME the drummer
who has allowed them to do that. (We drummers tend to
get blamed for ANY problems related to tempo.)
So . . . the moral of this story is . . .
TIP FOR FEMALES . . .
Female drummers . . . should try to
play as forcefully as any male, when the situation
calls for force and rhythmic-dominance.
* Don't be afraid to 'take control' of your band
and keep it.
A Groove Guide will help IMMENSELY, if this seems
difficult.
When we are ABSOLUTELY SURE of our tempo,
we'll tend to STICK TO OUR GUNS and hold solid, rather
than caving-in to intimidation from other dominating
musicians in the band.

Maintaining tempo-control is easier said than done
in this 'crazy' world of egomaniacal singers, bass-players
and guitarists, even for the MALE drummers. It's a
little tougher still, for the average lady.
Learn to hold the tempo SOLID!
Bad tempo = Bad drummer!
Gender doesn't matter at all!
.......................................................
Here ONLINE . . . Many of you may find it easy to absorb
SEVERAL lessons per week, while others may need several weeks
on each lesson! That's the advantage of online lessons!

Kids Talking to God
